Abstract

Article Summary

Green chemistry is a revolutionary approach that emerged as a response to growing environmental and human-health concerns caused by industrialization. It aims to design products and processes that minimize the generation of hazardous substances, reduce waste, and conserve resources. While the benefits of industrial growth including advancements in crop protection, commercial products and medicines, have enhanced human life, they have also lead to significant environmental harm. This paper explores the origins, goals, and innovations in green chemistry, emphasising its role in shaping a more sustainable future. Green chemistry principles also focus on reducing the environmental impact of chemical synthesis, minimizing dependence on fossil fuels, and designing chemicals with minimal hazard. The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) establishment in 1970 was a pivotal moment in regulating industrial emissions and safeguarding human health. However, green chemistry extends beyond these regulations, challenging scientists to develop non-toxic alternatives that can revolutionize chemistry and industry.
